Seeking Soft Serve

Our June breakfast meeting was held near Berryville, Virginia, at the Pine Grove Restaurant in Bluemont. The skies were overcast in Warrenton, but George Downes, King Troensegaard and Dave Hennessey rode the long scenic route through Middleburg, Upperville, and around the back side of Mt. Weather before reaching Pine Grove. Unfortunately, each of the trio had left their Special Facility Passes at home, and we had to forego the tour of Mt. Weather. George's long scenic route made us late, and we arrived after everyone else had already eaten. Hodge Harrison, our immediate Past President, rode out from Gainesville, but ran out of gas along the way and arrived really late - after even Geroge, King and Dave had finally finished breakfast.

The morning opened with heavy rain from Reston to Springfield, and the members from the more northern areas opted for rainproof 4-wheeled vehicles. These included Bob Nicholas, Mike Mueller, George Ogden, Juan Sakata, and Gabby Whetzel. Tim O'Hara from Warrenton had no rain excuse, but 4-wheeled it anyway.

We were very happy to see Tom "Rollo" Hardy who is recovering nicely. While he's restricted to 4-wheels at the moment, he expects to be back riding this fall.

Bill Lackman, who lives in Berryville, was the first to arrive, riding his 2006 Harley Softtail Springer with something you rarely see on new bikes - hand-shift / foot-clutch.

We welcomed Gary Caporaletti as our newest member, since he had just received his AMCA national membership card.

The real purpose of the meeting was not breakfast, nor chapter business meeting, nor fellowship - it was Soft Serve Ice Cream. After breakfast, George Downes led the riders on the Soft Serve Quest - we followed the Shenandoah River for mile after twisty mile along the appropriately named "River Road" then headed west towards Winchester until we reached our destination - Yummy's in Boyce,.Virginia, a few miles east of Winchester.

After consuming the quintessential frozen desert, we trekked back along US Routes 50/17. When they split, Gary continued on US 50, while the Warrenton crew headed down US 17 to Delaplane, thence through Marshall and back to Warrenton.
