My KH gas tank sat for more than 20 years with gas in it
- which eventually evaporated. The bottom of the tank
was very, very rusty.

I found that deck screws were the best for shaking - they
have many sharp edges, and they cut the rust pretty well.

I used the POR 15 sealer kit - a rust remover, a glop
remover, and finally the "paint" sealer. If your tank is
already painted, you might try that Evaporust instead of
a phosphoric acid rust remover.

Whatever product(s) you use, you need to get the rust
out, then any dried gas "glop", before drying and then
"painting".

When the directions say "clean", they mean clean. Not
kinda clean, not sorta clean - but really, really clean.

When the directions say "dry", they mean dry. Not kinda,
etc.

This is difficult as water tends to cling to the corners,
especially where you can't see. I used a heat gun set on
low stuck in the filler and exhausting through the
petcock hole. And let it run for several hours. If your
tank is already painted, you might want to use a hair
dryer instead of a heat gun, and multiply "several hours"
by some factor.

The sealer will not stick to a dirty or wet surface. One
non-stick spot will produce an edge that makes it easy
for the gas to slowly get under. So, when the directions
say clean...

I like Evaporust. My oil tank was crudded up. And I put
in a bunch of steel nuts in with it to shake around
inside the tank.
